What to do if a child does not want to study?

Date of publication: 10 June 2022
Date of update: 14 December 2023

For most students, doing homework often brings no pleasure but becomes a real challenge. When the first difficulties arise at school, the child may completely change their mind and may even begin to dislike school.

The main reasons are a lack of motivation and confidence. If it drags on for a long time, children may stop enjoying their lessons, not doing homework, and even start searching for an excuse not to go to school.

Some parents might wonder what to do if a child becomes indifferent and loses interest in the curriculum. How can they enhance their motivation? We will try to find an answer to the question in this article.

How to spark the child’s interest in studying

Recommendation 1. Study with your child

Particularly in the early stages of the study, it is crucial to give the child the necessary motivation and support. Parents can convince them that the study is exciting and kids can always learn something new.

      Recommendation 2. Learn through games

Play techniques are a great learning tool that opens up new opportunities to study at home. Parents should not worry that their child is wasting time. On the contrary, well-planned play activities can be helpful both in acquiring new knowledge and in the overall development of the child.

Recommendation 3. Maintain a comfortable learning atmosphere at home

To study comfortably and do homework, the child should have a cosy workplace with proper lighting.

Sitting at an uncomfortable desk can affect a sitting posture preventing a child from staying focused. It is important to create a place where they will strive to study and where they can learn self-sufficiency and accuracy.

Recommendation  4. Support the child's hobbies and praise him

Parental approval will help a child to believe in themselves and keep them motivated for a long time.

Recommendation 5. Answer the child's questions

Don't be afraid to spend a minute of your personal time answering all your child's questions, even if they may seem unnecessary or naive. In this way, they will develop a habit of being curious, developing critical thinking, and the ability to ask questions of themselves and others.

Summing up, the best advice on how to spark the interest of a child in studying is to help them to love the studying process, to make sure that the child strives to study not only at school but also at home. But we must keep in mind the mistakes many parents make.

The main mistakes in motivating children

      1. Wrong attitude to study

There are many parents who take education for granted. Children are starting to feel a great deal of pressure, responsibility, and even fear of making mistakes. Over time, these negative emotions increase their influence. In this case, it is crucial for parents to convince a child that studying can be easy and interesting, especially at preschool age, where the board and outdoor games can be included in the educational process.

      2. Wrong expectations of progress

All children are different. But even the most motivated child will not be able to sustain a strong desire to learn without seeing progress. Moreover, their results may not be the same in every subject. Each person has their own strengths and weaknesses.

Nevertheless, it is important to praise your children, even for small tasks, so the child will know that he is on the right track and will not get upset over trifles.

      3. Comparison with other children

Many parents make this mistake. In general, comments from teachers and parents may take on a different significance for children. Children rely more on the opinions of their mother and father, and even the mildest criticism can affect their motivation to study. They will feel awkward and even ashamed. These negative emotions may eventually make the child give up.

Do not forget to praise your child, because your words are very important to them.

The school also plays a key role in the educational process. Teachers and tutors should carefully monitor the progress of students and always be ready to help. Therefore, our last recommendation is to carefully choose a school for your child.

Advantages of the British International School

      • An individual approach to each child and individually-developed educational plan

Each person has one type of intelligence, therefore, an individual approach is crucial.

      • Integrated service, including 3 meals a day, a school bus, a wide range of children's clubs, and classes with a speech therapist

When well-developed infrastructure is placed within the school area, the child feels comfortable and begins looking forward to returning to the school.

      • High level of comfort and care based on a balanced daily routine, constant attention of teachers, the presence of a speech therapist and a school psychologist

      • Fully-equipped schools, including a library with Russian and English literature, halls and classrooms for sports, music, and art

A well-equipped British International School supports the students' hobbies. For sports, music or art, the school has comfortable classes with all the necessary equipment.  After the main lessons, each student can spend their free time in school clubs, developing their own skills and communicating with other children.

      • Close communication with parents, daily information about the progress of the educational process and the academic success of the child

Studying together with a parent is, of course, an exciting process, but for a comprehensive immersion in learning, professionals who work at a British international school are needed.
